Bird Kite From
How do I distinguish a red kite from a buzzard?

I'm not really a bird watcher or anything although I do know a little bit about common British birds.I'm just wondering if I actually saw a red kite because I read that they are very uncommon.the only thing I saw was a large brown bird that was white under the wings.I never really got to see the shape aswell because I was in a woods.I also live in north Wales countryside if that could help find the answer!!

Quite easily, Buzzards are heavy set and Red Kites are slimmer with a distinct V shaped tail. Just Google "Buzzard" and "Red Kite" and choose "images" or look up videos on You Tube of both species there are plenty of videos. This video actually shows both species, I have visited Gigrin Farm myself, amazing place http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qtjzarY2Js

Sounds like you saw a Buzzard, they would be common over woodland. Red Kite are not "rare" any more there have been several re-introduction projects over the years and they are much more common than they used to be. At one time you would only see Red Kites in Wales but they were once common in London, scavanging on the dead during the plague, they are carrion eaters.
