Calling all Mechanical people!! Diagnostic Question?
My fiancee has a late 80's oldsmobile cutlass cruiser, in good condition. This morning she went to start it up and she couldnt even get a crank on the key, but the dash lights were on. Also her brake pedal was stiff you couldn't move it at all. Shes had a problem in the past where either the car acted like someone was stepping on the brake when she wasn't or like she switched gears (but its an auto not a manual.) My first thoughts was either the starter or the cycnoid. Although after charging the battery still just the immovale brake and not even a crank no noise from the engine atoll. Any ideas mechanics out there?
Here's the checklist of what i'm doing tomorrow or checking
1. switching battery cables/battery
2. checking brake fluid (full though i'm sure)
3.alternator diagnostic test
4.starter switchout ...
The problem in your battery. It is NOT holding a charge, if it is even BEING charged at all. 1st, the brake problem. The brake is likely power assisted which requires vacuum to operate. Without the engine running, there is NO vacuum and NO power assist applied to the brake, so without the engine running, the brake will always be stiff. 2nd, the starter. Without sufficient power stored in the battery, the starter will NOT operate even though the lights will still work! The starter solenoid draws a LOT more power then the lights and you may have enough to run the lights, but NOT the starter solenoid. The thing to do is to simply jump the battery and see if that starts the car. If so, then you are sure the problem is the battery not holding a charge. Then your problem becomes one of whether the battery is not holding a charge or not being charged at all. Swap out the battery with one freshly charged and see what happens. If it starts, then you problem is the charging circuit not recharging the battery.
