if i wanted to make a mile course for middle school PE...?
Is it best to make it have any laps or to have a course where they're running around different parts of the school field. i think it might be psychologically easier if the scenery is always changing and kids might cheat if they have to run a certain number of laps. it might be easier to keep track of the kids if they're not repeating laps around the soccer field. the only problem is the course makes a lot of twists and turns so that i can mine a mile of distance out of a relatively small space (there are a number of swingsets and a basketball court which serve as landmarks for the people to turn around) and i wonder if that would make them prone to more cheating or getting confused. i think i've set it up so that i can swatch the entire race unfold from one single corner of the field, so the kids can be monitored even if there's only one PE teacher there.

Im currently in the students situation, I prefer the laps. It should be easy to tell if they cheated, if theres a big improvement in such a short time pay closer attention to that specific kid. And it is easier, in my opinion, to run the mile in laps, because its easier to pace and keep track of how far you are.
