Preparing my sloping lawn for a huge swing set?
I need to prepare my back yard for a huge (16' x 36') play house/swing set. My problem is should dig away my sloping lawn (eyeballing it looks like 2' drop over the length), or do I build a retaining wall and fill it in.
I will have to build a retaining wall either way, so please include ideas on a child freindly material for this as well.
I moved earth and built a retaining wall 20 yrs ago. It looks great--but it's falling apart. My best advice is to get a lot of professional advice! You must incorporate pipes that run perpendicular to your ledge so water can drain. Otherwise, rain runoff will eventually push through whatever and cause a breach in your wall. Also, don't forget that a 2-foot drop would be fun for a 6-year-old but potentially dangerous for a 3-year-old to play around. You can probably get lots of free advice from whomever you plan on buying materials from. I advise against wood with kids--it doesn't last long enough and it develops splinters. I would go with Belgian rock, myself. It's not cheap but the look is great. I'm sure there's something else you could use, I just don't know what offhand. I used fieldstone. The look is wonderful but again, it's a rather "fragile" construction--especially without drainage holes!
