Have you ever taken Beta Blockers to help with nervousness?
I'm currently learning trapeze, and I've just started going up on the high bars and I'm finding that my fear of being up so high and doing tricks, is actually making me shake and therefore have accidents. Would Beta Blockers help me? Do they actually take away the fear or do they just stop you from shaking? Would it be inadvisable to take them while doing a physically demanding activity? Thankyou.
Beta blockers slow down your heart rate and decrease some of the effects of fear like shaking, sweating, but you don't actually feel less fear.
They will definitely stop you from shaking, you will have to go to your doctor to get them prescribed (I don't really recommend using someone else's) to make sure you don't have any contraindications ie asthma. You could only be on a very low dose if a doctor even wants to prescribe them to you. (it will depend on case by case situation) Its not inadvisable during physically demanding activity but it could be seriously harmful doing trapeze from heights, because if it lowers the heart rate too much you could have an accident and fall.
I seriously seriously do not advise using a beta blocker of someone else, PLEASE see a doctor instead. -
