I have always found that picking out Christmas toys for toddlers is so so much fun. For some parents, it's extremely frustrating because some of the coolest looking toys don't even interest their child. I think that most parents know their children better than they admit. Use sound judgement and buy gifts when you get that gut feeling that you know it's the right gift.
Have you ever noticed how toddlers learn to play with their toys? The process is usually touching, smelling, tasting, and seeing-and this is not necessarily the order. As long as you purchase toys that are age appropriate, you will not have to concerned about choking hazards because most toys will not fit all the way in a child's mouth if bought for the correct age. Try this method and see for yourself that your child is capable of expressing what he or she wants.
Some parents think that because their toddler does not speak any intelligent words that they are not communicating. It comes natural for them, more out of survival than anything else.
I have found bringing my kids to Target, Walmart, or the local mall is the best way to test this method. Most kids will end up pulling toys off the shelves and start playing with them. Toddlers don't have the sense of ownership, so be careful with this method-if you break it you buy it! Often, a child will choose a toy that is for another gender or different age. Don't be too concerned with as long as their is no safety issue. My 2 boys play with dolls and doll houses.
Whenever we had social functions like going to church or parties, my wife and I usually took notice of what our kids were playing with. We used this method to purchase gifts later on. Our kids always acted so surprised when we presented them with gifts that they had played with before. My kids must have thought that we are super smart. Actually, it's just a matter of being a spy on their wants and desires. My wife even hid toys that my 2 boys had discarded in the closest or under the bed because they were bored with them. She recycled them several months later and the kids were so excited and thought they were new toys! Ya gotta do what ya gotta do!
It's time to get down to the basics of toy shopping. You may have all research complete and you are still a little sketchy about what to buy. Trust me, I can relate. We have bought tons of toys that were duds! My other "secret" method that is almost as good as hands on is to borrow the experience from other parents. Amazon has product reviews written by both satisfied and no so satisfied parents. These toy reviews are real because you had to have purchased the item from Amazon to write a review. If there a more than 10 reviews, chances are very high that you will know if the toy will work for your child.
Free shipping and deep discounts are a huge benefit to shopping online at major retailers like Amazon or Walmart. If buy more than $25, shipping is usually included.
Let's not forget the time tested classic wood toys for toddlers. Thomas The Train toys are a perfect example of great toys for toddlers. I still see adults playing with their 30 year wood train sets in their garages!
This is what I suggest for the classic wood Christmas toys for toddlers:
Stacking rings. A true old time favorite. Six smooth rainbow-colored rings are stacked in any order and topped with a large red ball.
Magnetic Stacking Train. Let 'em build the train and take it apart all day! Toddlers love the magnets. It's like magic for them. Mix the blocks around and stack them in imaginative ways - feel the fun way that the magnetic pieces stick together or repel each other.
I could write all day about this subject. I will end with this. The most important addition to Christmas toys for toddler(s) is time spent with you. Toys just seem more fun when a parent comes and watches. Remember when you were young and you said "Mommy! Daddy! Look at me!"? The tables have turned.
